The McAllen Area
In 1904 John McAllen donated land to the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railroad to ensure the railroad would cross the area. A depot was built, and the McAllen Townsite Company was formed to create the town of McAllen, which was officially incorporated in 1911. Agriculture, petroleum, and tourism drove McAllen’s growth through most of the 20th century. Today McAllen’s economy is primarily dominated by manufacturing trade and and tourism.
The Miller International Airport serves the McAllen area. McAllen is only minutes from the U.S./Mexico border.
